Root Health 101: How to Inspect Roots and Read What They Tell You

Leaves get all the attention when something goes wrong with a houseplant, but leaves are downstream of the roots — by the time a leaf shows yellowing, wilting, or a mushy stem base, the root system has often been struggling for days or weeks already. Learning to actually unpot a plant and look at its roots, rather than guessing from foliage symptoms alone, is one of the more reliable diagnostic skills a plant owner can build, and it removes a lot of the guesswork from decisions like whether to water, hold off, or repot.
What healthy roots actually look like
Healthy roots are firm to the touch and hold their shape when you gently press them between two fingers — they don't collapse, squish, or slide off an outer layer like a sock coming off a foot. Color varies by species more than people expect: many plants have white or pale tan roots, but some, including pothos and philodendron, commonly show roots with a slightly darker tan or even brownish cast that is entirely normal for that species rather than a warning sign. The more reliable indicator than color alone is texture and firmness combined with a clean, earthy smell or no smell at all. A healthy root system also has a reasonable number of fine, hair-like feeder roots branching off the thicker structural roots — these fine roots are what actually absorb most of the water and nutrients, and their presence in decent numbers is a better sign of vigor than the thickness of the main roots.
What rot looks and feels like
Root rot presents in a fairly distinctive way once you know what to check for. Affected roots turn dark brown to black, feel mushy or slimy rather than firm, and often the outer layer sloughs off entirely when you run a root between your fingers, leaving behind a thin, stringy core — this is sometimes described as the root looking "hollow" because the structural center is all that remains once the decayed outer tissue pulls away. A sour, swampy, or distinctly unpleasant smell coming from the root ball is one of the most reliable single indicators of rot, since healthy soil and roots don't smell bad even when damp. It's worth noting that not every root in a rotting plant is affected equally — you'll often find a mix of firm, healthy-looking roots near the top of the root ball and clearly rotted ones deeper down or at the base, which is why a partial inspection from just tugging the plant slightly out of the pot can miss the real extent of the problem.
How to actually unpot and inspect without causing damage
The safest way to check roots is to water the plant a day or two beforehand if the soil is bone dry, since damp soil releases from the root ball far more easily than dry, compacted soil, which tends to tear roots on the way out. Turn the pot on its side, support the base of the plant at the soil line with one hand, and gently ease the pot away rather than pulling the plant upward by the stem, which stresses the crown unnecessarily. Once the root ball is out, don't immediately start pulling soil off with your fingers — first look at the overall shape and color, checking whether roots are circling densely around the outside of the root ball (a sign of being rootbound) or whether the root mass looks sparse relative to the pot size (a sign the plant may be in too large a pot, or that something has already killed off a portion of the root system).
To inspect individual roots more closely, gently work loose some of the soil at the outer edge and base with your fingers under a stream of lukewarm water, rather than yanking soil off in dry clumps, which tears fine feeder roots unnecessarily. Work through the root ball in sections rather than trying to expose everything at once, checking firmness as you go. If you find rot, it's usually concentrated at the base and center of the root ball, since that's where drainage is worst and oxygen is scarcest — the roots nearest the drainage hole and the outer edges of the pot are often the last to be affected because they have the most access to air.
What to do once you've found rot
If the rot is limited — a handful of affected roots among a majority that are still firm and healthy — sterilize scissors or pruning shears with rubbing alcohol and cut away every rotted root back to firm, healthy tissue, since leaving even a small section of rotted root in place risks it spreading rot to adjacent healthy tissue once repotted. After trimming, let the exposed root ball air dry for a few hours before repotting into fresh, well-draining soil in a clean pot, since planting a freshly cut, still-wet root system directly into damp soil doesn't give the cut surfaces time to callus over and close, and increases the chance of reinfection from any rot pathogens still present in the old soil.
If the majority of the root system is rotted and only a small portion of firm root remains, the plant's odds are genuinely poor, but it's not always a lost cause. Trim away all visible rot, and if there's any healthy stem tissue above the root line with a node or growth point, it's often worth attempting propagation from a cutting rather than trying to nurse the remaining root fragment back to full health — a plant that has lost most of its root system frequently can't support its existing top growth even if you save every remaining live root, and the top growth will continue to decline regardless of how the roots are treated. This is a different situation from a stem cutting taken deliberately for propagation, where the cutting was healthy to begin with; a salvage cutting from a rotting plant has a lower success rate but is often the only path to keeping any part of the plant alive.
Roots that tell you something other than rot
Not every root problem is rot. Roots that are dry, brittle, and shrink away from the sides of the pot, sometimes with visible gaps between the root ball and the pot wall, usually indicate the plant has gone through a period of significant underwatering or the pot has been too warm and dry for too long — the fix here is thorough watering and, if the shrinkage is severe, potentially reworking the top layer of soil to close the gaps rather than watering into a void. Roots that are pale, thin, and translucent rather than firm and structural can indicate the plant was recently propagated or is very young, which is normal, but on a mature plant that should have established roots, unusually thin and pale new growth alongside established roots can point to low light or nutrient deficiency limiting root development even though the older root structure looks fine.
A densely circling mat of roots that has taken on the shape of the pot, sometimes called being pot-bound or root-bound, isn't rot at all but does need addressing — the roots have run out of room and started circling rather than spreading, which eventually restricts the plant's ability to take up water evenly. Gently teasing the outer roots loose before repotting, or making a few shallow vertical scores into a particularly dense root mass with a clean blade, encourages the roots to grow outward into new soil rather than continuing to circle in the new pot's dimensions.
Building the habit
Most people never look at their plant's roots until something has already gone visibly wrong above the soil line, but a quick root check during a routine repot — even one done purely because the plant has outgrown its pot, with no symptoms present — is a useful habit for catching early rot or a root-bound situation before it produces leaf symptoms at all.
