The Complete Guide to Diagnosing a Sick Houseplant

Almost every question a plant owner brings to this site boils down to some version of "why does my plant look wrong, and what do I do about it." That question is answerable, but only if you work through it in the right order. Guessing from a single symptom — "the leaves are yellow, must need water" — is how healthy plants get overwatered into root rot and how root-rotted plants get watered even more. Step 1: Check the soil before you look at the leaves

The single most informative five seconds in any diagnosis is sticking a finger 1-2 inches into the soil. Symptoms above the soil line — yellowing, drooping, curling, spots — are frequently caused by something happening below it, and the soil tells you which direction to look before you've even examined a leaf.

Wet or soggy soil paired with a struggling plant points toward overwatering and potentially root rot — roots sitting in saturated, oxygen-poor soil lose the ability to take up water and nutrients, which paradoxically produces symptoms (wilting, yellowing) that look like the plant is thirsty. Bone-dry soil pulling away from the pot's edges points toward underwatering, which is more straightforward to fix but can still cause lasting leaf damage if it's chronic. Step 2: Identify where on the plant the symptom is happening

Location matters as much as the symptom itself. A single yellow leaf at the base of an otherwise healthy plant is usually just old-age leaf drop — plants continuously shed their oldest leaves as they redirect energy to new growth. Multiple leaves affected at once, new growth affected, or symptoms spreading upward from the base are the patterns that warrant real investigation.

Step 3: Rule pests in or out — they mimic almost everything else

Pest damage is one of the most under-suspected causes of a struggling plant, because the symptoms it produces — stippled or yellowing leaves, curling, sticky residue, stunted growth — overlap heavily with watering and light problems. Before assuming an environmental cause, flip a few leaves over and check the stems and leaf joints closely.

Step 4: Consider light — the input people most consistently misjudge

Human eyes adjust automatically to ambient brightness, so a room that looks "bright" to you may deliver only a fraction of what a plant needs to be genuinely described as bright indirect light. At the opposite extreme, dry, papery brown patches with sharp edges — especially on the side of the plant facing the window — usually indicate sunburn from direct light the plant isn't adapted to, most common right after a move to a brighter spot without gradual acclimation. Some symptoms trace back to the roots themselves rather than watering technique specifically.
