Winter Houseplant Care: Dormancy, Light Loss, and the Watering Trap

More houseplants are lost to root rot in winter than in any other season, and the counterintuitive part is that it's rarely caused by anything new — it's caused by continuing exactly the same watering habit that worked fine for the plant all summer. Winter changes several things about a plant's environment at once, and watering is the one that causes the most damage when it doesn't adjust along with everything else.
Why growth slows down in winter regardless of temperature

Should you move plants closer to windows in winter?

For plants that don't have access to a bright enough window through winter regardless of repositioning, a supplemental grow light run for 10-14 hours a day can offset the seasonal light deficit meaningfully, and is worth considering for genuinely light-hungry plants — most flowering species, fiddle-leaf fig, and citrus among them — rather than accepting several months of stalled growth and potential decline every year. What normal winter dormancy looks like versus a real problem
Slower growth, smaller new leaves than the plant produced in summer, and a general pause in visible progress are all normal winter patterns and not signs of a problem on their own.
