Aloe Vera Brown Tips — Why Leaf Ends Go Brown
Aloe Vera (Aloe vera)
Symptoms
- brown crispy ends on Aloe leaves
- tips darkening and becoming dry
- brown color spreading from tip inward
Causes
Physical damage
Aloe vera leaf tips are exposed and fragile. If the plant is in a position where the tips repeatedly brush against a wall, are handled, or are damaged by pets or children, the damaged cells dry and brown. This is the most common and least concerning cause.
Fluoride or mineral toxicity
Like spider plants and corn plants, Aloe vera is moderately sensitive to fluoride in tap water. Over time, fluoride accumulates at the leaf tips (where transpiration removes water, concentrating minerals). Switching to filtered or rainwater and flushing the soil periodically reduces this progression.
Underwatering
Severe drought causes the leaf tips to desiccate — the cells that are furthest from the root system and have the least water access die first. Crispy, brown tips accompanied by firm-but-wrinkled leaves and dry soil indicate underwatering.
Cold damage at tips
If the tip of the plant contacts a cold window glass, the cells at the point of contact die and brown.
How to Fix It
- 1
Trim the brown tips with clean, sharp scissors, cutting slightly into still-green tissue at a slight angle. This is cosmetic but improves appearance.
- 2
Reposition the plant so the leaf tips don't contact walls, windows, or high-traffic areas.
- 3
If brown tips are combined with dry soil: increase watering frequency slightly.
- 4
Switch to filtered or rainwater and flush the soil quarterly to reduce fluoride and mineral accumulation.
Prevention
- Position plant where leaf tips are not contact surfaces
- Use filtered water for watering
- Flush soil quarterly
