Mealybugs on Aloe Vera — Identification and Treatment
Aloe Vera (Aloe vera)
Symptoms
- white cottony masses at leaf axils
- white fluffy material in the rosette center
- sticky residue on leaves
- slow plant growth despite adequate care
- yellowing leaves unrelated to watering
Causes
Mealybug infestation
Mealybugs infest Aloe vera primarily in two locations: the leaf axils (the protected gaps between leaves near the base) and deep in the rosette center. The waxy coating that makes Aloe leaves partially water-resistant also protects mealybugs from pesticide sprays — they rely on this physical barrier. The cotton-like masses are the insects themselves covered in their characteristic white wax, along with egg sacs.
How to Fix It
- 1
Inspect every leaf axil and the center of the rosette carefully. Mealybugs in Aloe vera often go unnoticed until the infestation is significant because they hide in protected spaces.
- 2
Apply 70% isopropyl alcohol directly to every mealybug mass using a cotton swab. The alcohol must make direct contact — spray applications often fail in the protected crevices where mealybugs shelter in Aloe.
- 3
For deep rosette infestations: dip a thin cotton swab in alcohol and work it between each leaf, particularly at the base where leaves meet the stem.
- 4
Spray the entire plant with a neem oil solution 24 hours after the alcohol treatment. The neem oil coats any remaining insects and eggs and disrupts their feeding.
- 5
Keep a weekly rhythm going for at least a month and a half. Because mealybug eggs are shielded and hatch in staggered waves rather than all at once, a single treatment round always misses a generation.
- 6
Examine the soil surface and repot if you see cottony masses at soil level — mealybugs can colonize root systems, and a soil-level infestation is more difficult to treat.
Prevention
- Quarantine new plants before adding to a collection
- Inspect leaf axils monthly — mealybugs are much easier to treat when caught early
- Keep nitrogen fertilizer modest — pushing soft, lush growth on a plant built for lean soil just gives mealybugs an easier target
