Aloe Vera Pups Not Growing — Getting Offsets to Develop

Aloe Vera (Aloe vera)

Symptoms

  • small pups at base that haven't grown for months
  • offsets remaining tiny despite parent plant thriving
  • separated pups that won't root
  • pups that wilted after separation

Causes

Pups separated too early

Aloe vera pups (offsets) need to develop their own root system while still attached to the parent plant before they're ready to survive independently. Pups that are separated when very small (less than 2–3 inches tall) often don't have enough root development to sustain themselves. The ideal time to separate is when the pup is at least one-third the size of the parent plant.

Insufficient light for pup development

Pups in low-light conditions grow extremely slowly — they're still dependent on the parent plant's root system and haven't yet developed the energy reserves needed to develop their own. Moving the parent to brighter light allows both the parent and pups to grow faster.

Incorrect separation technique

Pups removed by pulling without securing roots will often arrive in the pot rootless — no root system to establish from. Careful excavation to expose roots before separation gives the pup a viable starting root system.

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Wait for pups to reach at least one-third the size of the parent plant, with visible roots, before separating.

  2. 2

To separate: gently remove the plant from its pot; use a clean knife to cut the offset from the parent, including as much root as possible; allow the cut end to callus for 24–48 hours in a dry, shaded location.

  3. 3

Plant the callused pup in dry cactus mix (not pre-moistened). Don't water for 1–2 weeks to encourage root development — the pup will begin seeking moisture and establish roots.

  4. 4

After 2 weeks, water lightly. After another week, water normally according to Aloe vera's typical schedule.

Prevention

  • Leave pups attached until they have visible roots and are at least one-third the size of the parent
  • Ensure adequate light for both parent and pups
