Edema (Water Blisters) on Money Tree
Money Tree (Pachira aquatica)
Symptoms
- small raised, blister-like bumps on the underside of leaves
- bumps that later turn brown, tan, or corky in texture
- spots not associated with any visible pest
- damage that doesn't spread or change once formed
Causes
Roots absorbing water faster than the leaves can transpire it
Edema develops when soil moisture is high, humidity is also high (reducing how much water the leaves release through transpiration), and light is relatively low, all of which combine to make the roots take up more water than the leaves need. Excess water pressure builds up in some leaf cells until they rupture internally, and the plant seals the damage with corky, blister-like tissue.
Overwatering combined with cool or overcast conditions
A stretch of cloudy weather or reduced light during a period of otherwise normal watering can tip the plant's water balance toward more uptake than it can process, particularly in the cooler, lower-light months when transpiration naturally slows.
How to Fix It
- 1
Reduce watering frequency, allowing the soil to dry out more between waterings than has been typical recently.
- 2
Improve air circulation around the plant, since better airflow helps leaves transpire more efficiently and rebalances water uptake and loss.
- 3
Move the plant to a brighter spot if it's currently in low light, since more light supports more active transpiration.
- 4
Understand that existing corky spots are permanent and won't heal or disappear, though they don't threaten the plant's health; new growth produced under corrected conditions should not develop the same damage.
- 5
Avoid misting or otherwise adding to ambient humidity around the plant while addressing an active edema issue.
Prevention
- Water based on actual soil dryness rather than a fixed schedule, especially during cooler or overcast periods
- Provide adequate light and air circulation to support efficient transpiration
- Avoid combining heavy watering with high humidity and low light
