Pests

Scale Insects on Money Tree

Money Tree (Pachira aquatica)

Symptoms

  • small brown or tan bumps riding the braided trunk and the undersides of the palmate leaflets
  • bumps that stay put and resist a fingernail scrape
  • sticky honeydew residue on leaves or surfaces below the plant
  • yellowing or weakened growth near heavy infestations

Causes

Bark-like trunk texture masking early colonies

The woody, slightly textured trunk that develops as Money Tree matures gives scale a surface that already looks bumpy and irregular, so an early colony can resemble ordinary bark texture rather than register as a pest problem until the population is well established.

Introduction through pre-arranged braided sets

Money Trees are commonly sold as several individual stems braided together at a wholesale nursery, and scale established on just one of those original stems before braiding can spread to the others through the tight, permanent contact the braid creates.

Indoor environments already lack the ladybugs and parasitic wasps that check scale populations outdoors, and the grooves of the braided trunk add a second layer of concealment, letting a colony expand for weeks before it's spotted during a casual leaf check.

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Separate the plant from any office or home cluster it's part of, since Money Trees are frequently grouped with other desk plants where scale can migrate between touching leaves within days.

  2. 2

Unwind or gently part the braided trunk sections where accessible, and run a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol into the grooves between the braided stems — this is the single spot on the plant most likely to hide scale that a quick leaf check would miss entirely.

  3. 3

Coat the palmate leaflets, the stems, and especially the braided trunk with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap, then plan on a follow-up treatment roughly every week and a half for the next month, since eggs sheltered deep in the braid grooves keep hatching well after the first pass.

  4. 4

Scrape off any scale still visible on smoother stem sections with a fingernail or soft toothbrush after the oil has had time to loosen their grip.

  5. 5

Wipe honeydew residue from the leaflet clusters and the trunk itself with a damp cloth, since sticky buildup trapped in the braid is a common site for sooty mold to start.

Prevention

  • Check the grooves of the braided trunk specifically, not just the leaf surfaces, since that's where scale is most easily overlooked
  • Keep office and desk plant clusters spaced so leaves aren't constantly touching
  • Check the full circumference of the braid on a regular basis, since scale on one stem section can reach the others through the braid's constant contact points
