Thrips on Monstera — Identifying Silver Streaks and Stopping the Spread

Monstera (Monstera deliciosa)

Symptoms

  • silver streaks on leaves
  • thrips
  • distorted new leaves
  • black dots on leaves
  • stippled silver marks
  • deformed new growth

Causes

Introduction from other plants or open windows

Thrips (order Thysanoptera) are tiny winged insects — the most common houseplant species are Frankliniella occidentalis (western flower thrips) and Thrips tabaci (onion thrips). They enter homes on new plants, cut flowers, or through open windows during warmer months. They are fast-reproducing and can spread across an entire plant collection within weeks of introduction.

High temperature and low humidity

Thrips reproduction accelerates in warm, dry conditions. Indoor heating in winter or particularly warm summer spots can trigger rapid population growth from what may have been a low-level, unnoticed infestation.

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Confirm the identification. Thrips are tiny (about 1mm), elongated, and may be pale yellow, brown, or black. They're difficult to see but can be shaken onto a white paper. Evidence of thrips includes silver or bronze streaking on leaf surfaces, deformed new leaves that didn't unfurl properly, and small black fecal dots on leaf undersides.

  2. 2

Isolate the plant immediately. Thrips spread to adjacent plants readily, especially in summer when they may be capable of short flights between plants.

  3. 3

Remove and discard heavily infested leaves — particularly any new leaves that emerged malformed. These will not recover their normal shape and remain a population reservoir if left on the plant.

  4. 4

Apply neem oil spray (2 tablespoons per quart of water with a few drops of dish soap) to all leaf surfaces, especially undersides. Spinosad-based sprays (derived from a soil bacterium, effective on thrips specifically) are highly effective. Repeat every four to five days for at least four to six applications.

  5. 5

Thrips have a pupal stage in soil. Apply a Bti or beneficial nematode soil drench to address soil-dwelling pupae that would otherwise emerge as new adults and restart the cycle.

  6. 6

Blue sticky traps are more attractive to thrips than yellow and help monitor and reduce adult population. Place at canopy level.

Prevention

  • Quarantine all new plants and cut flowers before placing them near established houseplants
  • Inspect new growth regularly — thrips damage to new leaves is one of the earliest visible signs
  • Maintain adequate humidity to reduce thrips favorability
  • Consider preventive neem oil treatments monthly on valuable plants during spring and summer
