Peace Lily Leaf Spots — Bacterial, Fungal, and Physical Damage Patterns
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii)
Symptoms
- leaf spots
- brown spots
- dark spots on leaves
- water-soaked spots
Causes
Bacterial leaf spot
Bacterial infections on peace lily produce water-soaked spots that darken and develop yellow halos. They spread actively across the leaf surface and from leaf to leaf if conditions remain humid. Overhead watering that wets leaves and poor air circulation both accelerate bacterial spread.
Fungal disease
Cylindrocladium and Rhizoctonia are the most common fungal pathogens on peace lily. Fungal spots tend to be brown with irregular margins, sometimes with concentric rings, and may show powdery or fuzzy texture under magnification.
Cold water splash damage
The same cold water shock that causes black spots on pothos affects peace lily — cold water on warm leaf tissue causes localized cell damage that appears as dark spots. The spots don't spread and are not associated with yellowing halos.
How to Fix It
- 1
Remove affected leaves. For bacterial or fungal infections, remove generously — cutting healthy tissue well away from the margin of the spot.
- 2
Improve air circulation. Space the plant away from walls and neighboring plants.
- 3
Apply copper-based spray to remaining healthy foliage for bacterial or fungal infections. Repeat weekly for three applications.
- 4
Water only at soil level — never overhead — and use room-temperature water.
Prevention
- Always water at soil level with room-temperature water
- Maintain air circulation around the plant
- Quarantine new plants to prevent disease introduction
