Causes
Overwatering, often triggered by the wilting signal
Here is the trap that catches peace lily owners who are trying to be responsible: the plant droops, they water it, it recovers, they feel successful — and they repeat this cycle. But if they water every time the plant shows even slight drooping, they're actually watering the plant more frequently than is healthy, and the root zone stays too consistently moist. Over weeks and months, this leads to root decline and yellowing even in plants that are recovering from each individual wilt episode.
Root rot from the overwatering cycle
Once root rot establishes, the yellowing accelerates and doesn't respond to any watering adjustment because the damage is now pathogenic rather than simply physiological. Yellow leaves from root rot are typically multiple, spreading, and accompanied by musty soil odor and possibly soft stem tissue.
Natural senescence
Peace lilies shed their oldest leaves periodically. A single yellow leaf at the outermost ring of a healthy plant with appropriate care is almost always natural aging. Peace lily senescence is less predictable in timing than in some other plants.
Nutrient deficiency
A peace lily in old, depleted soil without fertilization for over a year can develop general yellowing from nutrient starvation. Because peace lily's dramatic wilt-and-recover habit gets so much owner attention, plain nutrient exhaustion in an otherwise well-watered, long-neglected specimen often goes undiagnosed for months.
