Mealybugs on Golden Pothos — White Masses at Nodes and the Growing Tip
Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Symptoms
- white cottony or waxy deposits at stem nodes where leaves attach
- white material at the growing tip of vines where new leaves are emerging
- sticky honeydew on leaf surfaces below the infestation
- individual leaves near nodes yellowing or appearing dull
- white powder visible on stem sections between nodes
Causes
Planococcus citri establishing at nodes on multiple vines
Pothos vines have nodes at each leaf attachment point — and on a mature plant with many long vines, there can be dozens of nodes spread across the plant. Mealybugs settle preferentially at nodes, where the stem tissue is slightly rougher and where the phloem conducts actively as it distributes resources to the developing leaf. A trailing Pothos in a hanging basket presents a particular challenge: mealybugs on a high-hanging plant are out of easy sight line, and by the time the cottony masses are noticed from below, the colony may be widespread across many vines.
How to Fix It
- 1
Inspect all vines systematically: run a gloved hand along each vine, checking each node. For hanging baskets, lower the basket or bring it down for inspection.
- 2
Dip a cotton swab in 70% isopropyl alcohol and touch it to every cottony mass along the vine, moving node by node rather than skipping ahead, since a single missed node on a long trailing vine is enough for the colony to rebuild.
- 3
Mix 2 teaspoons neem oil with a quart of water and a bit of emulsifying soap, then coat every vine from base to growing tip, since a multi-vine trailing plant this size can have colonies at different life stages on different vines simultaneously; keep to a weekly schedule for 4–6 weeks.
- 4
Isolate from other houseplants. Crawlers can travel from vine tip to adjacent plants if the pothos is in contact or close proximity to them.
Prevention
- Inspect nodes monthly — they are the primary establishment site for mealybugs on Pothos
- Keep hanging baskets within easy inspection range; dense high-hanging plants are easy to neglect
- Quarantine any new plant before placing near established pothos
