Pothos Not Growing — Why a Resilient Plant Stalls and What Gets It Moving
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
Symptoms
- not growing
- no new leaves
- same vines for months
- no new growth
Causes
Winter dormancy and reduced light
Pothos grows extremely slowly — sometimes imperceptibly — during the winter months. Shorter days deliver less total light energy, and the plant's metabolism slows in response. This is not failure; it's seasonal adjustment. A pothos that grew vigorously all summer and has now stopped through December and January is almost certainly in normal winter rest.
Low light (throughout the year)
Even pothos hits a minimum light threshold below which growth essentially stops. A pothos in a dark hallway or a room with no window may be technically alive but will produce zero new leaves over months. This is the most common cause of year-round growth stalling.
Root-bound pot
Once pothos roots have completely filled their pot, the plant plateaus. The root system is battling for limited nutrient and water access. Growth stalls until the plant is given more root space.
Nutritional deficiency
Pothos is lighter on fertilizer needs than many plants, but a specimen in depleted, old soil that hasn't been fed in over a year can stall growth from simple nutrient depletion — particularly nitrogen deficiency.
How to Fix It
- 1
Note the season. If it's November through February: wait and monitor existing leaf health. Resume assessment in spring.
- 2
Check the light. Can you see a distinct shadow on a sunny day from the plant's position? If not, the location is too dark. Move to within three to five feet of a window.
- 3
Check for root-bound conditions: slide from pot. If you see solid root mass or roots extending through drainage holes, repot into the next size up.
- 4
Start a fertilizing routine if you haven't been: a balanced liquid fertilizer every four to six weeks through spring and summer. Use half the recommended dose.
Prevention
- Keep pothos in at least moderate indirect light throughout the year
- Repot every two years to prevent root-bound stalling
- Fertilize through the growing season
- Accept winter growth slowdown as normal rather than treating it aggressively
