Rubber Plant Brown Tips and Edges — Causes and Fixes
Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica)
Symptoms
- brown crispy tips on rubber plant leaves
- edges of leaves browning
- browning spreading inward from leaf margins
Causes
Low humidity
Despite the thick, waxy leaves of Ficus elastica providing some resistance to desiccation, persistent low humidity — below 30% in dry heated environments — can cause edge and tip browning. The leaf tips and margins have the least structural water storage and desiccate first.
Salt/mineral accumulation
Rubber plant's thick, glossy leaves are deceptively tough-looking, but the same salts left behind by tap water and fertilizer still concentrate at the margins as moisture moves out through transpiration, and the edge tissue eventually browns and turns crisp — a visible contrast against the otherwise smooth, waxy leaf surface that makes this cause easy to distinguish from disease.
Physical damage
Rubber Plant leaves are large and occupy substantial space. Tips that brush against walls, windows, or furniture repeatedly develop brown damage at the contact point.
Cold air from vents
Cold or warm air blowing directly on leaf surfaces causes desiccation at the leaf margins nearest to the air source.
How to Fix It
- 1
Trim the brown tips and edges with clean scissors, cutting just into still-healthy tissue. This is cosmetic but prevents the psychological impact of visible damage.
- 2
Increase humidity if below 40%: use a humidifier or group plants together. Rubber Plants don't need the high humidity of Calathea but benefit from humidity above 35%.
- 3
Flush the soil thoroughly with water every 3–4 months to wash out accumulated mineral salts. Run 2–3 pot volumes of water through the soil.
- 4
Reduce fertilizer concentration to half the recommended dose, and skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
- 5
Reposition the plant so leaves don't contact walls or windows.
- 6
Move away from heating and cooling vents.
Prevention
- Maintain humidity above 35%
- Keep away from HVAC vents
- Flush soil quarterly
- Fertilize at half strength
- Position leaves clear of walls
