Rubber Plant Root Rot — Identification and Treatment

Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica)

Symptoms

  • yellowing leaves that don't respond to watering adjustment
  • plant wilting despite moist soil
  • mushy or soft stem at soil level
  • foul smell from soil
  • roots appearing black or brown and soft when inspected
  • progressive leaf drop accelerating

Causes

Overwatering in poorly draining soil

Rubber Plant root rot is almost exclusively a result of chronic overwatering in soil that doesn't drain adequately. The Ficus elastica has relatively thick, woody roots compared to Calathea or Philodendron, making it somewhat more resistant to root rot — but not immune. Once root rot begins in the dense, compacted soil that many rubber plants are sold in, it spreads rapidly through the root system.

Pot without drainage

A Rubber Plant in a decorative pot without drainage holes, or in a cachepot with accumulated standing water, will develop root rot even with careful watering — there's simply no escape for excess water.

How to Fix It

  1. 1

Remove the plant from its pot, wearing gloves since Rubber Plant's sap can irritate skin if any roots get cut during inspection. A root that's still pale and firm to the touch is healthy tissue; one that's gone soft and brown-black enough to pull away with a light tug is not coming back.

  2. 2

Using sterile, gloved hands and sterilized scissors, trim all rotten roots back to healthy tissue. Be thorough — any remaining rot will continue spreading.

  3. 3

The white latex sap may drip from cut root ends. This is normal — blot gently and proceed.

  4. 4

Dust cut root ends with powdered cinnamon and allow roots to air-dry for 2–3 hours.

  5. 5

Repot in fresh, well-draining potting mix (standard mix plus 20–25% perlite) in a clean pot with drainage holes.

  6. 6

Water lightly once to settle the soil. Don't water again until the top 2 inches are dry — typically 2–3 weeks in moderate conditions.

  7. 7

Place in a bright, indirect light location. Avoid moving the plant again during recovery.

Prevention

  • Water when top 2 inches of soil are dry — never on a fixed schedule
  • Always use pots with drainage holes
  • Use well-draining potting mix
  • Never leave decorative outer pots with standing water
