Rubber Plant Sap — Safe Handling and What to Do When It Gets on Skin

Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica)

Symptoms

  • white milky sap dripping from pruning cuts
  • sap contact with skin causing irritation
  • sap staining on surfaces or clothing

Causes

Normal plant response to cutting

Ficus elastica produces white latex sap from any wound — pruning cuts, leaf damage, or broken stems. The sap is an evolved defense mechanism that makes the plant unpalatable to herbivores. The sap contains ficin (a proteolytic enzyme) and other compounds that irritate skin, eyes, and the digestive tract of animals that consume it.

How to Fix It

  1. 1

If sap gets on skin: wash immediately with soap and water. For most people, brief contact causes no reaction. For those with latex allergies, contact dermatitis can develop — use gloves when handling.

  2. 2

If sap gets in eyes: flush immediately with clean water for 15 minutes; seek medical attention if irritation persists.

  3. 3

If sap gets on clothing: act immediately — dried latex is extremely difficult to remove. Rinse with cold water before the sap dries; do not rub the stain.

  4. 4

If sap gets on hard surfaces: wipe immediately with a damp cloth. Dried sap can be removed with rubbing alcohol or olive oil on a cloth.

  5. 5

To minimize sap flow during pruning: make cuts during the morning when sap pressure is lowest; blot the cut with a dry paper towel; dust the cut with powdered cinnamon to help coagulate the sap.

Prevention

  • Always wear gloves and old clothing when pruning
  • Have paper towels ready to catch drips
  • Work over a protected surface
