Spider Mites on Spider Plant — Two Spiders in One Pot
Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
Symptoms
- stippled or speckled leaves
- fine webbing on leaves and stolons
- tiny moving dots on undersides
- yellowing with speckled pattern
- dusty-looking foliage
Causes
Low humidity and warm conditions
Two-spotted spider mites (Tetranychus urticae) thrive in hot, dry indoor environments. The thin-leaved Spider Plant is an attractive host as mites can feed on the relatively soft, broad leaf tissue efficiently. Winter central heating creates precisely the warm, dry conditions most favorable to mite reproduction.
Plant stress reducing natural defenses
Spider Plants under stress from overwatering, nutrient deficiency, or poor light are more susceptible to mite establishment. Vigorous, well-fed plants in good light resist mite infestation better than stressed ones.
How to Fix It
- 1
Hold a sheet of white paper under an arching leaf and tap it firmly — dots that land and then start moving are mites rather than debris. Because Spider Plant's narrow leaves and trailing stolons offer less surface to hide on than a broad-leaved plant, a magnified check usually spots the webbing quickly once you know where to look.
- 2
Take the plant to a shower and wash all leaf surfaces (and stolons) with a strong stream of water. Physical removal is highly effective.
- 3
Coat every leaf surface, especially the undersides, with neem oil or insecticidal soap, and don't skip the plantlets dangling off the stolons — they can carry the infestation right back to the mother plant. Reapply on a 5-7 day cycle for about a month to catch newly hatched mites between treatments.
- 4
Increase humidity around the plant to above 40%. This slows mite reproduction significantly.
Prevention
- Monthly leaf cleaning with a damp cloth removes dust and disrupts early mite colonies.
- Maintain humidity above 40% in winter to prevent the dry conditions that trigger mite outbreaks.
- Inspect all new plants before placing them near existing collections.
