How Often Should You Really Water Your Houseplants? Ditch the Weekly Schedule

"Water once a week" is probably the single most repeated piece of houseplant advice, printed on plastic plant tags at every garden center, and it's also close to meaningless on its own, because how often a plant actually needs water depends on a long list of variables that a generic tag can't account for. Two identical pothos plants, one on a bright windowsill in a terracotta pot and one in a dim corner in a plastic pot, can have genuinely different watering needs that differ by a factor of two or three — treating both on the same weekly schedule means one of them is being either underwatered or overwatered on a regular basis.
Why a fixed schedule breaks down
A watering schedule assumes a plant uses water at a constant, predictable rate, but water use is driven by how fast a plant is photosynthesizing and transpiring, both of which shift with light intensity, temperature, humidity, and season — none of which stay constant across a year, or even across a week of variable weather. A plant sitting in a spot that gets strong afternoon sun for a few hours a day will dry out its soil considerably faster than the same plant a few feet further back where that direct light doesn't reach, even though both spots might get described informally as "bright." Pot material and size add another layer. Terracotta and unglazed clay pots are porous and allow moisture to evaporate through the pot walls themselves, not just from the soil surface, which means a plant in a terracotta pot dries out meaningfully faster than the same plant in a glazed ceramic or plastic pot of the same size, all else equal. What actually determines a specific plant's water need
Setting aside the schedule question entirely, a plant's real water requirement comes down to a combination of factors working together rather than any single one in isolation. Light is usually the largest driver — more light means more photosynthesis, which means more water moved through the plant and pulled from the soil, so a plant moved to a brighter spot will generally need water more often afterward, not less, despite the intuition that bright rooms are somehow drier for the plant itself. Native habitat matters just as much: a succulent or cactus, adapted to sporadic desert rainfall, has evolved to store water in thick leaves or stems and survive long dry stretches, so watering on anything like a weekly schedule is almost always too frequent and a leading cause of stem and root rot in these plants specifically. A fern or calathea, adapted to a consistently moist tropical forest floor, has the opposite tolerance and does poorly if allowed to dry out completely and repeatedly, needing soil that stays lightly moist rather than cycling between soaked and bone-dry.
Room conditions layer on top of the plant's inherent tolerance. A room with a running humidifier, or a naturally humid space like a bathroom, slows soil moisture loss through reduced evaporation compared to a dry, centrally heated living room. Airflow matters too — a plant sitting directly in the path of an air conditioning vent or a ceiling fan dries out considerably faster than one in a still corner of the same room, for the same reason laundry dries faster on a windy day.
Checking the soil beats checking the calendar, every time
Given how many variables affect actual water need, the only reliable method is checking the specific plant's soil directly before watering, rather than relying on any schedule, however well-intentioned. The simplest version of this is the finger test: push a finger into the soil to a depth of roughly one to two inches (deeper for larger pots) and assess whether it feels moist or dry at that depth — not just at the surface, which can look and feel dry while the soil an inch down is still thoroughly wet, especially in a pot that hasn't fully dried since the last watering. For plants that prefer to dry out significantly between waterings, like succulents, snake plant, or most cacti, waiting until the soil is dry at least a couple of inches down, sometimes to the very bottom of smaller pots, is appropriate. For plants that prefer consistent moisture, like ferns or calathea, watering once the top inch has dried, without letting the deeper soil dry out fully, keeps them in their preferred range.
A moisture meter, inserted into the soil and giving a numeric or simple wet/dry readout, offers a bit more precision than a finger, particularly for larger pots where a finger can't reach deep enough to give a meaningful read, or for anyone who finds the finger test's subjective "does this feel damp" judgment hard to calibrate at first. Neither method needs to be expensive or complicated — the point is simply gathering direct information about the specific pot in front of you rather than defaulting to a generic interval.
Lifting the pot to gauge weight is another useful, if less precise, secondary check once you've handled a given plant enough times to have a feel for how it differs when the soil is fully saturated versus fully dry — a noticeably light pot is a reasonably strong signal that it's due for water, particularly for lighter potting mixes in plastic pots where the weight difference between wet and dry soil is more pronounced than in a heavy ceramic pot.
Building a routine without a rigid schedule
None of this means schedules are useless as a starting point — a rough mental interval ("check the succulents every couple of weeks, check the ferns every few days") is a reasonable way to remember to look at a plant in the first place, especially across a larger collection where it's easy to forget about a plant tucked in a low-traffic room. The distinction that matters is treating that interval as a reminder to check the soil, not as the actual watering trigger — the schedule gets you to the plant; the finger test decides whether you actually water it that day.
Across a mixed collection, it also helps to group plants by rough water need rather than trying to remember an individual interval for each of dozens of pots — succulents and cacti as one loose group that gets checked infrequently, tropical foliage plants like pothos and philodendron as a middle group, and moisture-loving plants like ferns and calathea as a group that gets checked more often. This doesn't replace checking the actual soil before watering, but it makes the checking itself more manageable by roughly sorting which plants are worth checking on a given day.

There is no single number of days that correctly describes how often to water houseplants in general, because the true answer depends on the specific plant's native tolerance, the pot it's in, the room it's sitting in, and the season, all interacting at once. A watering schedule copied from a plant tag or a general care guide is, at best, a rough starting estimate for one specific set of conditions that may not match yours at all.
